by Emily Marek

Nearly one-third of Americans say they’d prefer to live in the suburbs — but which small towns offer the best options for homeowners and buyers?

Wallethub ranked over 1,300 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 to determine the best small city in America this year. The financial analysis company created their ranking based on 45 metrics that measure affordability, education, health, quality of life and safety.

One Washington city — the Seattle-area town of Redmond — ranked in the 99th percentile, meaning it’s among the top 1% of all small cities in the country. Redmond additionally ranked third overall for economic health.

Further down the list were the Seattle-area cities of Sammamish, which ranked in the 96th percentile; Issaquah, which ranked in the the 95th percentile; Kirkland, Maple Valley and Bothell, which all ranked in the 92nd percentile; and Mercer Island, which ranked in the 91st percentile.

Bellingham, located just outside of Vancouver, ranked in the 85th percentile, its score bolstered by its ranking as the city with the most coffee shops per capita. The Seattle-area town of Olympia also ranked in the 85th percentile.

On the flip side, several small Washington cities appeared at the bottom of Wallethub’s ranking. Yakima ranked in the 16th percentile and Spanaway ranked in the 29th percentile, while Pullman, Lakewood and Spokane Valley ranked in the 39th percentile.
