Seattle among the most educated cities in the country

by Emily Marek

Seattle is one of the top cities where college-educated people are putting their degrees to work, according to a new report from WalletHub.

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and GreatSchools.org, the finance company analyzed the 150 largest metropolitan areas in America to determine which is the most educated based on factors like percentage of diploma holders, average university quality, local public school quality and racial/gender education gaps.

The No. 1 city on the list was Ann Arbor, Michigan, which ranked first for rate of educational attainment and first for lowest gap in quality of education versus attainment.

Seattle came in at No. 9 overall. While educational attainment levels in Seattle are lower than in other metros, like Washington, D.C., San Francisco or Madison, Wisconsin, the gap between quality of education and education attainment is relatively low in the Emerald City.

So, the Puget Sound area is among the most educated in the country — but what does that mean for Seattle?

“Cities want to attract highly educated workers to fuel their economic growth and tax revenues,” said WalletHub Financial Writer Adam McCann. “Higher levels of education tend to lead to higher salaries. Plus, the more that graduates earn, the more tax dollars they contribute over time.”

Here’s WalletHub’s top 10 list of the most educated metros in America:

  1. Ann Arbor, Michigan
  2. San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California
  3. Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, D.C.
  4. San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, California
  5. Madison, Wisconsin
  6. Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina
  7. Boston-Cambridge-Newton, Massachusetts
  8. Raleigh-Cary, North Carolina
  9. Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Seattle
  10. Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown, Texas
