Oprah sells scenic Orcas Island home for $14M

by Liz Economou

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey recently unloaded her Orcas Island vacation home, walking away with a handsome profit of $5.725 million.

The queen of talk sold her scenic abode, dubbed Madroneagle, for $14 million. Oprah purchased the 41-acre property in 2018, for $8.275 million, confirmed the seller’s agent, Wally Gudgell of Windermere Real Estate/Orcas Island.

The deal marks the highest price ever paid for a property located on Orcas Island, located some 100 miles north of Seattle, sources familiar with the sale told the Biz Journal.

Oprah and Bob Greene, her trainer and property manager, are heavily involved in the community, noted Gudgell.
“They are great partners,” Gudgell told Seattle Agent magazine. “We are fortunate to have them involved in our community.”

Greene and Oprah will retain the commercial properties they own together, including the building on Main Street that houses Brown Bear Baking and the Darvill Building, home of Darvill’s bookstore, according to Gudgell.

Greene, however, still owns a seasonal home on the island.

The lucky buyer, meanwhile, has much to look forward to. The gated Madroneagle compound, which boasts more than 10,000 square feet of living space, is the ideal sanctuary with rugged trails and a secluded beach.

The buyer, according to reporting from Puget Sound Business Journal, is from the greater Seattle area.
