After teaching English abroad, first in South Korea and then Spain, Walter Weaver began his lending career with a mortgage call center, taking applications over the phone in Spanish. “I heard people in the call queues and befriended a woman from Paraguay named Rosa,” Weaver remembers. “She explained how others were accepting mortgage and home-equity applications, and eventually I was hired permanently.” Within a year, he became a top producer and earned a trip to the President’s Club.
In the industry for 20 years, Weaver is a mortgage advisor with BECU. Last year, he helped a buyer who owned another mortgage company buy a house with a jumbo loan that was outside normal parameters. He recently worked with underwriting to approve a first-time condo buyer whose situation was also outside normal guidelines. “I was able to convince management to expand our guidelines to accommodate larger loans in the Seattle market,” he explains. “But I also fight for the little guy.”
Receiving most referrals from his own book of business, Weaver also gains leads from the credit union. “The best compliment I can receive is a referral,” he declares, adding that the mortgage industry is one in which the longer he stays, the more knowledge he gleans. “My time in the industry has taught me that the most successful loan officers listen attentively to their clients.”
A member of GSBA, an LGBTQ+ chamber of commerce, Weaver gives back to the community through Literacy Source and the Trevor Project. He and his husband, Marc, have two chihuahuas and enjoy skiing, traveling and tasting new food and wine. They also love bicycling and recently took a self-guided bike trip through the south of France.
