Seattle had the highest net migration in the country among major U.S. cities in 2022, led mostly by millennials seeking to relocate for tech jobs.
Nashville and San Antonio were next for net migration, the report from This Old House shows.
Seattle was also No. 1 for net migration among millennials, followed by Austin, Texas; Nashville; Charlotte and Denver.
“This is a big shift from 2021, when Seattle ranked No. 115 in terms of millennial influx,” the report said. “Enough millennials moved to the Emerald City in just one year to knock Austin out of its top seat.”
Gen Z, though, is another story. The top cities for Gen Z net migration were Washington, D.C., Chicago and Boston. Seattle was No. 11 on that list.
On the whole, Washington’s net migration across all generations was up 1,732 in 2022. Millennials led the way with a net positive of more than 20,600 people in Washington, while baby boomers had the largest net negative of more than 11,500.
