Seattle ranks first in North America for community spirit

by Emily Marek

Cities on the West Coast make up many of the top areas in the country to meet new people, with Seattle ranking as the very best.

Despite the Emerald City’s former reputation as a hard place to make friends — The Seattle Times coined the term “Seattle Freeze” in 2005 in reference to the phenomenon — a new study from Remitly calls Seattle the North American city with the most community spirit.

So, what’s changed? Seattle offers 1,774 meetup groups, defined by the immigration website as social clubs where people can meet friends who share similar interests and passions. That shakes out to 24.5 available meetup groups per 10,000 residents — almost double that of the third-highest city on the list.

Take a look at the full top 10:

  1. Seattle
  2. Boston
  3. Vancouver, Canada
  4. Portland, Oregon
  5. Denver
  6. San Diego
  7. Austin, Texas
  8. Sacramento, California
  9. Atlanta
  10. Baltimore
