Seattle is one of the top cities for working parents

by Emily Marek

Working full time and raising a family can be a challenge in any city. However, a new report shows that certain cities are better suited for working parents and their children.

CoworkingCafe ranked U.S. cities with over 200,000 residents based on education (including metrics like childcare affordability and public school rankings, availability and density) and work (including metrics like the share of remote workers, the share of remote-eligible jobs and available coworking space), which were each weighted at 40%. Health and environment (including metrics like pediatrician availability, green space availability and air quality) was weighted at 20%.

Seattle earned a score of 57.1, making it the third-best U.S. city for working parents behind Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Virginia.

What makes Seattle such a hospitable place for working parents? For starters, over one-fifth of the population in the Puget Sound area works remotely, the third-highest share of any city in the country. The city also has the fifth-highest rate of workplaces that allow hybrid work both at home and in the office at 79%.

Seattle also has a dense population of public schools — with a public school every 1.7 square miles, there are over 113 public schools per every 100,000 children in the area. Washington state’s school system is also ranked 13th in the nation.

Furthermore, Seattle boasts 8.5 acres of green space per 1,000 residents and offers 135 pediatricians per 100,000 children.
