Seattle is — officially — one of ‘America’s best cities’

by Emily Marek

World’s Best Cities has announced their ranking of the best cities around the country, with Seattle coming in at No. 8.

The ranking is based on six main criteria: place (including walkability, bikeability, landmarks and outdoor areas), product (airports, convention centers, museums, universities and pro sports teams), programming (culture, nightlife, food, shopping and attractions), people (diversity, education levels and percentage of the population born outside the U.S.), prosperity (number of Fortune 500 companies, knowledge based-businesses, cost of living and poverty rates) and promotion (based on Facebook check-ins, google searches and trends, Tripadvisor reviews and Instagram hashtags).

Taking all that into account, Seattle ranked at No. 8 overall — Seattlites enjoy a relatively low cost-of-living compared to their earnings (No. 3 overall), trailing only Silicon Valley and Austin, Texas. The metro also ranked in the top 10 for walkability and bikeability scores and earned points for public transport options and numerous food and shopping attractions.

World’s Greatest Cities also notes that Seattle’s resilience during the pandemic helped to curb economic turbulence felt in other parts of the country.

In addition to Seattle, Spokane appeared on the list at No. 83.
