A mail-order house from the Sears catalog

by Emily Marek

209 Forest Hill Road (via HOME & SKY)

This Georgia home was originally purchased via snail mail from a Sears catalog.

According to the national database, Sears Houses, the retailer — known at the time as Sears, Roebuck & Co. — sold blueprints, as well as all the necessary lumber and building materials, from 1908 to 1942. Customers could then follow instructions to build their own home, or hire a builder to do it for them.

This particular Sears home, located at 209 Forest Hill Road in Macon, Georgia, follows the Alhambra blueprint, with four bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms. The property also features original hardwood floors and a solarium.

Judging by ads for the Alhambra model, the original buyers likely purchased their home for between $1,969 and $2,998. Today, it’s listed by Nitara Murray and Brione Coleman of Virtual Properties Realty for $279,000.
