Seattle Zoomers will spend over $200,000 on rent before they hit 30

by Emily Marek

By the age of 30, Gen Z renters in Seattle will have spent $205,534 on rent, according to a new study from RentCafe.

That’s a steep price to pay for apartment living — but it’s nearly $80,000 less than they would have spent on homeownership. In fact, Seattle is one of the U.S. metros with the biggest differences between renting costs and homeownership costs, with the average Gen Z homeowner poised to spend $284,327 by the time they reach 30. Nationally, the difference between renting and owning is just above $20,000.

By comparison, Seattle millennials spent less on renting and homeownership before age 30, spending about $270,000 on rent and about $256,000 on homeownership.

However, Gen Zers in Seattle make approximately $132,000 more than their millennial predecessors, with an average household income of $862,591 by age 30.
