Nationwide, homeowners are most likely to spend money on a fresh coat of paint to upgrade the exterior of their house. But can the same be said for Seattle residents?
According to the 2023 U.S. Houzz & Home Study from home design website Houzz, exterior renovations were a priority for homeowners last year. The company surveyed over 25,000 homeowners in the 30 largest metro areas in the country and found that two in five don’t ever plan on moving out of their current home — but given that the median U.S. home is 42 years old, many are in need of a facelift. And because those homeowners aren’t planning on moving, they have the confidence — and the funds — to invest in the exterior of their home.
Exterior paint doesn’t reign supreme in Seattle, though: 31% of Seattle respondents invested in new windows or skylights in 2023, the highest proportion of any exterior renovation. Windows were followed by fresh paint at 30%, new exterior doors at 24%, updated gutters or downspouts at 24% and new decks at 24%.
Across the U.S., homeowners were least likely to upgrade their chimneys at only 8%. Similarly, only 10% of Seattle homeowners undertook a chimney upgrade last year.
