Living up to its lush nickname, the Emerald City is America’s best landscaped city, according to a new study from Sodlawn.
There are many factors that contributed to Seattle’s ranking, but one of the top reasons is residents’ access to local parks and green spaces. The Trust for Public Land reports that 99% of Seattle residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park.
Seattle also works hard to protect trees and keep its residents shady. American Forests gave the Puget Sound area a score of 90 out of 100 when it comes to tree equity — in other words, the city has more than enough trees to ensure that all residents experience the benefits of living in a foliage-rich area.
But there’s more: Seattle also boasts 400 pieces of public art and 200 public sporting facilities, as well as 29 miles of protected bike lanes, four miles of unprotected bike lanes and 29 miles of neighborhood greenways.
“There are so many factors that contribute to a well-landscaped city, and we only focused on a few of those things. But from our research, it’s clear that Seattle has put a lot of care into making their city both beautiful and livable for its residents,” Gene Barrow, vice president of Sodlawn, told Seattle Agent. “Public art displays, safe bike infrastructure and broad access to parks can do wonders for a community, and it’s great to see cities like Seattle recognize this.”
